GREGORIAN MILLENNIUM
2001 BI-METAL COIN

According to the modern Gregorian calendar, the third millennium
starts in the year 2001. To celebrate this event the Perth Mint
has brought out the Gregorian Millennium 2001 Bi-Metal Coin.
Featuring a 99.99% pure gold border, the coin's design takes
after that of a contemporary watch in recognition of the modern
time keeping methods. The watch hands indicate 8.00am Perth time,
which is 0.00 Greenwich Mean Time, which is the time that the third
millennium begins officially. To represent the leap seconds that
are methodically added to synchronize today's highly accurate
atomic time keeping with the rotation of the Earth, the second
hand on the coin is at 1 second past. Made from 99.9% silver,
the central design of the coin features an observatory and the
night sky highlighted in colour. Representing the planets orbit
around the sun, which takes one year, there are three depictions
of the Earth in different positions. Having a legal tender of $20.00,
the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. There is a limited mintage
of 7,500 individual coins that will be issued.
