COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002 MANCHESTER
TRI-METAL PROOF COIN
Brought out by the Royal Australian Mint, this is the first Tri-metal coin
released in Australia. The coin has a fine gold (99.99%) center, a pure
silver (99.9%) inner ring and a copper (99.9%) outer ring, simulating
the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded to competition
winners. This is an immensely beautiful coin with its intricate reverse
and obverse designs. The customary Ian Rank-Broadley image of Her
Majesty is displayed on the fine gold center of the obverse, while on
the inner pure silver ring are the words: 'Elizabeth II Australia 2002
Fifty Dollars'. The outer ring depicts a collage of wattle blossom,
interwoven with Eucalyptus leaves. On the reverse, a group of athletes
stand above a laurel wreath with arms raised in the form of a crown.
The words: 'The XVII Commonwealth Games Manchester 2002'
appear on the inner ring, while a succession of running figures circle
the outer ring. The encapsuled coin is housed in a plush velvet
presentation case with an embossed outer box and a Certificate of
Authenticity signed by the Controller of the Mint. There is a limited
mintage of 5000 coins to be released by the Mint so be quick to secure
the first ever tri-metal coin issued in Australia.

Empire Games in 1981 and in 1930 the first British Empire Games was
held in Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. The name held until 1954 when
they were renamed the British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
From 1966 to 1974 they were called the British Commonwealth Games
and since 1978 the have been known as the Commonwealth Games.
Australia can be proud of the record of achievement of its athletes in
the Commonwealth Games over the years. While at the first Games in
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1930, English athletes won the most
medals; Australian athletes have consistently received the greatest
share of medals over the modern era games. This coin is dedicated to
the Commonwealth Games and honours Australia's athletes, as well as
all other competitors participating in the 2002 Games.
