2003 1oz SILVER PROOF KANGAROO
IN PRESENTATION CASE
This is a stunning coin that has been released by the Royal Australian Mint
and is the 11th year that the 1 Troy Oz $1.00 silver kangaroo coin the series
has released. Aboriginal artist, Ray Thomas, has taken this Silver Proof
Kangaroo coin from a sketch, after he has spent many years researching
his people's myths, legends, designs and bodymarks. Ray comes from the
Gunnai people of the Gippsland area in the state of Victoria. The design
of the kangaroo, or "Jirrah-Watty", is described by the artist as
a beautiful majestic Australian icon. In the design he is seen with
the sun's rays streaming down on the sunburnt country. A hilly horizon
is in the distance with another icon, the Grass Tree. Evolving towards
a more personal style, Ray is mainly self-taught and has combined a
temporary sensibility with an awareness of traditional Gunnai designs
and motifs in his design of the roo. The banded sections symbolize the
length of a single bound by the Kangaroo. The line work patterning
features strongly in the artist's work and is so from being one of
the Gunnai people. Faithfully sculpted and then struck in fine silver
to the Royal Australian Mint's high standards, this coin celebrates
Australia's best known animal and features the third Aboriginal design
in this series. Made from 99.9% fine silver this coin comes complete
in a presentation case and with a Certificate of Authenticity.
An unbelievable piece to add to any collection.
