2003 FINALE HOLOGRAM COIN
YEAR OF THE VOLUNTEERS

This stunning fine silver proof $5 coin is Australia's third and final release
in the Royal Australian Mint's 'Finale' series of hologram coins. The
release of this coin celebrates the work done by Australia's many
willing Volunteers. The reverse of the coin features a hologram
showing three ordinary Australian faces, signifying that anyone can
become a volunteer. An array of images appears around the faces,
showing some of the volunteer activities engaged in by Australians of
all walks of life, ranging from firefighting to conservation and the care
of young people. The worldwide mintage for this 2003 dated proof coin
is set at 15000.
The optically variable properties of the hologram image are due to the
extremely fine scale pattern of ridges covering the area of the image.
The ridge pattern or 'diffraction grating' causes the light striking the
image to be split into its component colours according to the spacing of
the ridges in different parts of the image. The minute ridges are struck
onto the surface of the coin itself by the use of special 'shims' or small
metal plates that act like dies when the coin is struck in the press. The
optically variable image technology known under the trademark
EXELGRAM was developed by the CSIRO. This coin is a remarkable
end to the 'Finale' series and a beautiful coin by itself, any collector
would be proud to own such a stunning coin.
