2003 SELECTIVE GOLD PLATED KANGAROO COIN
FIRST EVER BY THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN MINT
Here we have an absolutely gorgeous coin that has been brought out by the
Royal Australian Mint as a part of the Silver Kangaroo Series. This $1
Fine Silver Kangaroo Coin is a legal tender collector coin and is
Australia's first selective gold coin to be released. Struck from 99.9%
fine silver and featuring 99.99% gold, this coin has a mass of 1 Troy
Ounce. The obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy
of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse of the coin
features a design taken from a sketch by Aboriginal artist, Ray Thomas.
The design depicts 'Jirrah-Watty' - the Big Kangaroo - in full flight
with the central motif exhibiting the selective plating, to enhance the
intricate detail of the Kangaroo image. The distinctive line work and
patterning features are characteristic of the Gunnai people, from
Gippsland in the state of Victoria, where Thomas is originally from and the
banded sections symbolize the length of a single bound. "Jirrah-Watty
is a majestic Australian icon," explains Thomas. "In the design he is
seen with the sun's rays streaming down on the sunburnt country, a
hilly horizon is in the distance along with another icon, the grass tree."
This truly stunning coin comes to you housed in a terracotta coloured,
leather like display case, along with a numbered Certificate of
Authenticity. Definitely a piece that any collector would be proud to
own in their collection and a prime example of numismatic creativity.
