NICOLAS BAUDIN FRAMED COMPOSTION
Navigators and Explorers Series

Many of Australia's French place names can be attributed to Captain
Nicolas Baudin's 'expedition maritime d'exploration scientifique' to
the then 'New Holland' in 1800 - 1804. Baudin's ships, Le Geographe
and Le Naturaliste, were home to many artists and scientists who
contributed immensely to the world's scant knowledge of the strange
southern land. Baudin faced the rugged coastline of this yet largely
undiscovered continent and contemplated its secrets, while there he
learned much about the continents people, flora and fauna. In April
1802, Baudin - whose achievement is commemorated by this 99.9%
pure silver bar specially struck by The Perth Mint - was involved in an
extraordinary encounter. As the party headed along the lonely south
coast of Australia, it unexpectedly met Matthew Flinders' ship HMS
Investigator. While France and Britain waged war, the two expedition
leaders found kinship in their isolation and "held friendly conferences"
at Encounter Bay, which are celebrated by this bicentenary stamp
issued jointly by Australia Post and France La Poste.
This superb composition is comprised of a collage of images and documents
and a bicentenary 'Encounter' commemorative joint issue stamp. This
framed set also includes a 99.9% pure silver bar, which was specially
struck. There are a limited number of framed sets to be issued so you
had better be quick; with only 1000 being issued they are sure to be
going fast.
