MATHEW FLINDERS FRAMED COMPOSTION
Navigators and Explorers Series
The man who charted the complete coast of Terra Australis and suggested
that it be named Australia, was a genius of navigation and cartography.
In 1978, Matthew Flinders sailed around Van Diemen's Land
(Tasmania), proving it was an island. Three years later, the British
Government sent the intrepid navigator to undertake an altogether
loftier project - to complete the charting of the 'Great Southern Land'
in HMS Investigator. As a result of that expedition, Flinders produced
the first map of the entire continent, an achievement commemorated by
this 99.9% pure silver bar specially struck by The Perth Mint. As he
sailed along Australia's southern coast in April 1802, Flinders
unexpectedly met the French ship Le Geographe under the command of
Nicolas Baudin. This bicentenary stamp issued jointly by Australia Post
and France La Poste celebrates their historic meeting at Encounter Bay.
Each framed set comprises of a fascinating collage of images and
documents and a bicentenary joint issue stamp. The Perth Mint will
only be issuing 1000 of these sets that would make an excellent piece
of history for your collection.
